Dr Day is President and CEO of Mortality Research & Consulting, Inc., and is an active researcher and consultant for the company. Dr Day earned a PhD in applied statistics, with substantive field epidemiology, from the University of California at Riverside in 2001. Prior to 2011 he worked for nearly a decade as an independent professional consultant and expert witness on issues related to life expectancy and other biostatistical topics with Strauss & Shavelle, Inc./The Life Expectancy Project in Riverside and San Francisco, California.

Dr Day is a Fellow of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK), a member of the Society for Epidemiologic Research, and a member of the American Statistical Association. He has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed studies of survival, mortality, life expectancy, and other epidemiological topics related to persons with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, and other medical conditions. He has authored studies published in peer reviewed journals including Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, the Journal of Insurance Medicine, and the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr Day periodically serves as a peer reviewer for a number of these journals. He has lectured on the topic of life expectancy and related subjects to audiences of medical professionals, life care planners, forensic economists, and attorneys.

As part of his professional consulting activities, Dr Day has provided expert opinions on life expectancy and other epidemiological topics in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK. Dr Day has testified in state and federal courts in the US on numerous occasions and in 18 different states. He has been deposed on more than 100 occasions.
